5-Day 'Competent Crew'

5 days out on the water

Meet new freinds

Get qualifications that will serve you well in the marine industry

Ability to charter a boat (Day Skipper) or work on a boat (Competent Crew)

Refreshed rejuvenated and ready to take on anything

The Competent Crew Course is 5 days long and we will travel from Dun Laoghaire Marina to Cork Harbour over the 5 day period. We will teach you everything you need to know to become a useful crew member, including personal safety, seamanship and helmsman ship. It is provided by Sail Cork, and delivered onboard the Brian Boru. The course is accredited by both RYA and IS.

You’re welcome to attend by yourself, with friends, family or a partner. We will aim to visit a different marina, harbour or anchorage each evening.

Our ratio is up to 5 students per instructor and you will have great fun. We think that a few days on a boat will allow you to get away from it all, while advancing your nautical skills.

This course is ideal if you have done little or no sailing before. You will become a useful crew member and an asset to anyone you go sailing with. Running the boat and eating on board (apart from perhaps the odd meal out in a pub or restaurant) you will learn lots about sailing, life on board and how fun it is.

Minimum Pre Course Experience: None required.

Ability after the Course: You will be a useful crew member!

Course Content: Basic seamanship and helmsmanship.

The course is best taken over 5 consecutive days

We can also run different courses at the same time, on the same boat. So if a friend, family member or partner would like to complete another course, such as the Day Skipper they can do so at the same time as yourself.

Space is tight, so bring as little with you as you can get away with.  Bring only soft bags (no wheeled bags, frame rucksacks or suitcases).

  • Towel – big enough to use after a shower or swim
  • Warm clothes. Synthetic (sports) clothes are best.  Try to avoid cotton, especially jeans as they are too difficult to dry.
  • Warm, waterproof, windproof jacket.
  • Fleeces or wool jumpers (avoid cotton). It is always a bit colder at sea than on land
  • T-shirts – long sleeve and short sleeve
  • Shoes with good grip that are either waterproof or dry quickly.
  • Warm hat
  • Gloves – sailing gloves, gardening gloves or work gloves for handling traditional ropework.
  • Swimsuit – we generally get to swim off the boat at least once during the voyage.
  • Sun protection and lip balm (use a high SPF, as the reflection off the sea makes the sun stronger)
  • Small bag or soft back pack for going ashore, especially for carrying towel and change of clothes when using shore based showers.
  • Medication with full instructions for use
  • Camera (but not an expensive one – salt water and expensive cameras don’t mix)
  • Phone
  • A reusable drinking water bottle You can refill using the water supply on board Brian Ború
